Ulisse Aldrovandi's Monstrorum Historia (1642) - Monstrous races part 1

Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522 -1605) was Italian naturalist and one of the founders of Natural History in Europe. He wrote many book about animals and plants by collecting, examining and describing thousands of species. He was the founder of the Bologna's botanical garden, one of the first in Europe that still exists today.

His book Monstrorum historia cum Paralipomenis historiae omnium animalium (1658) is a bizarre book containing hundreds of illustrations depicting, dragons, monsters, monstrous animal like humans, and anything that can be classified today as teratogenesis.

Most of them were mythical narrations from ancient times. Some of them seem to be exaggerations from travellers’ descriptions of existing cultural body modifications or body ornaments, genetic abnormal growth or distortions caused by illnesses, etc. Some of them are completely weird and maybe they were products of travellers’ fantasy in order to impress their audience.

  2. Absolutely amazing post, it seems so strange to me that people honestly considered that these might be real creatures!

Still that said there is the recorded instance of a town in the UK trying a ships monkey as a frenchmen....

  3. yes it is, but we must take into acount that there was a huge part or the world completely unknown to the majority and the few travellers spread their expieriences mainly orally, so exaggerations from mouth to mouth and from time to time were very possible no matter the will of the trabveller to be accurate in his descriptions
