Deux jeunes filles (La Belle Rosine) (1847)

Βέλγος ρομαντικός ζωγράφος με αρκετά σκοτεινά έργα του που απεικονίζουν μακάβρια θέματα,όπως αυτοκτονίες, αποκεφαλισμούς, κλπ. Σε πολλά έργα του συνδυάζει ρομαντισμό, ερωτισμό και μακάβρια θεματολογία, όπως στο πιο γνωστό έργο του το ειρωνικό memento mori: "Deux jeunes filles (La Belle Rosine) (Δυο νέα κορίτσια (Η ωραία Ροσίν)) ή "The Two Beauties" του 1847". Η ετικέτα στο κρανίο γράφει "Η ωραία Ροσίν"

Τα έργα του με τους αποκεφαλισμούς ήταν μια διαμαρτυρία του ενάντια στη θανατική ποινή εν γένει και το έργο του "Η πρόωρη ταφή" είναι εμπνευσμένο από τον Edgar Alan Poe

Guillotined Head (1855)

Antoine Joseph Wiertz was a Belgian romantic painter and sculptor. Ηe painted a confrontation of Beauty and Death, "Deux jeunes filles—La Belle Rosine" or "The Two Beauties."(1847), which remains perhaps his most famous work. The skeleton of the woman has a label pasted to her skull which identifies her as "La Belle Rosine"

Wiertz, works depicting decapitations was a statement against capital punishment. Also his work "The Premature Burial" was inspired by Edgar Alan Poe. (www.bc.edu)
