Temptations of Saint Anthony

Pieter Huys (1547)
Most of what is known about the life of Saint Anthony comes from the Life of Anthony, written in Greek around 360 by Athanasius of Alexandria. Famously, Anthony is said to have faced a series of supernatural temptations during his pilgrimage to the desert. These temptations were a famous repeated subject in paintings from medieval to modern times, with the most bizarre and creepy depictions of the demons that Saint Anthony allegendly confronted. Read about these temptations in English here and in greek here

  1. Δεν το πιστεύω ότι έχει εμπνεύσει τόσους πολλούς καλλιτέχνες! Απίστευτο κι όμως αληθινό!
