Boris Vallejo, Epic Fantasy part 4

Boris Vallejo (born January 8, 1941) is a Peruvian-born American painter. He emigrated to the United States in 1964, and he currently resides in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He frequently works with Julie Bell, his wife, painter and model.

Vallejo works almost exclusively in the fantasy and erotica genres. His hyper-representational paintings have graced the covers of dozens of science fiction paperbacks and are featured in a series of best-selling glossy calendars. Subjects of his paintings are typically gods, monsters, and well-muscled male and female barbarians engaged in battle. Some of his male figures were modeled by Vallejo himself, and many of his later female characters were modeled by his wife. His latest works still retain heavy fantasy elements, but lean more towards the erotic rather than pure fantasy themes. (wikipedia)

H Lilith τυπικά είναι σύμβολο επανάστασης, οργής και ατίθασης σεξουαλικής επιθυμίας, ειδικά στον μύθο που την θέλει πρώτη γυναίκα του Αδάμ. Η προέλευσή της χάνεται στα βάθη των αιώνων. Παρουσιαζόταν συνήθως ως ένας θηλυκός δαίμονας της νύχτας, στην εβραϊκή παράδοση κυρίως, αλλά παρόμοιες μορφές έχουμε σε πολλές λαογραφίες αρχαίων λαών, από την Μεσοποταμία μέχρι την αρχαία Ελλάδα. Η μορφή της όμως διαδόθηκε με πολλές παραλλαγές κυρίως κατά τη διάρκεια του μεσαίωνα και σε κείμενα και σε θρύλους που σχετίζονταν με την άνθηση της μαγείας.

Πιθανόν να έχει την προέλευσή της στους θρύλους των λαών της Μεσοποταμίας ως θηλυκός δαίμονας των καταιγίδων, που ήταν φορέας αρρωστιών και θανάτου και τρεφόταν με μωρά και γυναίκες, με το όνομα Lilitu. Το όνομα Lilith πιθανότατα προέρχεται από το αρχαίο Ισραήλ κατά το 700 πΧ. Η αρχαιότερη αναφορά σε παραπλήσια δαιμονική μορφή είναι Σουμεριανή και αφορά τoν αρσενικό Lilu που είχε σεξουαλικές επαφές με γυναίκες στη διάρκεια του ύπνου τους, ενώ η Lilitu εμφανίζεται να εισβάλει βίαια στα ερωτικά όνειρα ανδρών που όμως δεν μπορεί να συνευρεθεί ομαλά μαζί τους. Ολες αυτές οι μορφές αναφέρονται σε θρύλους με διάφορες παραλλαγές από λαό σε λαό και από εποχή σε εποχή. Επίσης οι δοξασίες του φαινομένου της υπνικής παραλυσίας για τους δαίμονες incubus – succubus και τη Μόρα – Βραχνά μάλλον κρατάνε από εκείνη την εποχή. Θα επανέλθουμε κάποια στιγμή σε αυτούς.

Σε κάποια μεσαιωνικά κείμενα αναφέρεται ότι η Lilith ήταν η πρώτη γυναίκα του Αδάμ που δημιουργήθηκε παράλληλα με αυτόν, σύμφωνα με μια ερμηνεία εδάφιου του βιβλίου της Γένεσης. Όμως ο Αδάμ και η Lilith μάλωναν συνέχεια για θέματα ισότητας των φύλων, και η Lilith καθότι ανεξάρτητο πνεύμα και υπέρ της ισότητας στο όνομα της κοινής δημιουργίας τους, κάποια στιγμή τον εγκατέλειψε. Όμως στους εκβιασμούς του Θεού μέσω των αγγέλων που έστειλε να την αναζητήσουν, αποδέχθηκε, για χάρη της ανεξαρτησίας της, την κατάρα να σκοτώνει βρέφη ρίχνοντάς τα αρρώστιες, με μόνη δυνατότητα σωτηρίας τους να έχουν γραμμένα σε φυλαχτά πάνω τους τα ονόματα των αγγέλων του Θεού.

Μια άλλη διήγηση θέλει την Lilith να είναι και το φίδι που εξαπάτησε τους Πρωτόπλαστους, γι’αυτό και υπάρχουν πολλές μεσαιωνικές και μετέπειτα εικονογραφήσεις μιας φιδίσιας θηλυκής μορφής να εξαπατά τον Αδάμ και την Ευα.

Στην αρχαία Ελλάδα, υπήρχε ο θρύλος της Λάμιας, με αρκετές ομοιότητες με τους μύθους γύρω από την δαιμονική αυτή μορφή της Lilith. Η Λάμια ήταν ένας κακόβουλος θηλυκός δαίμονας που έκλεβε και σκότωνε βρέφη. Περιγράφεται να έχει σώμα γυναίκας από τη μέση και πάνω και φιδιού από τη μέση και κάτω. Σύμφωνα με μια διήγηση, την καταράστηκε η Ηρα να γεννάει νεκρά παιδιά επειδή είχε κοιμηθεί με τον Δία. Από τη λύπη της μεταμορφώθηκε σε τέρας και ξεσπούσε τον φθόνο της σε μητέρες κλέβοντας και καταβροχθίζοντας τα μωρά τους. Επίσης απόκτησε και βαμπιρικές τάσεις με το να πίνει το αίμα αντρών.

Lilith typically symbolizes rebellion, rage and an untamed sexual nature. She was mainly a malevolent female night demon, mainly in Ancient Jewish tradition, but also in ancient Mesopotamia and ancient Greece. Also in medieval ages her stories were given new interpretations, in relation with magic, in literature and in art. The first malevolent demons, either male or female with related name were found in ancient Mesopotalia, about 4000 BC, male Lilu and female Lilitu, both storm demons bringing diseases, od invading in women’s or men’s sleep respectively. The name Lilith was Jewish and is traced from 700 BC.

In some medieval stories Lilith was referred as the first Adam’s wife who created together with Adam. They have conflicts about sex domination issues, so Lilith, as an independent character left Adam alone. But God, supporting Adam, threatened her, so she accepted the curse to kill infants in order to keep her independence. So she invaded houses with newborn infants, that hadn’t amulets with angel names written on it.

Other narrations charge Lilith as being the tempting serpent who cheated Adam and Eve. This may relate to various late medieval iconography of a female serpent figure, believed to be Lilith, tempting Adam and Eve.

In ancient Greek mythology, Lamia was a malevolent female demon, half woman, half serpent that devours babies. She was cursed by Hera to give birth stillborn babies, because she has a sexual affair with her husband Zeus. Her grief turns to envy towards other women and killed their newborn infants.
