The "Kiss of Death" in Poblenou cemetery, Barcerlona

To νεκροταφείο Poblenou στη Βαρκελώνη είναι ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά της αξιοθέατα και το παλιότερο νεκροταφείο της (ξεκίνησε η δημιουργία του το 1776 και τέλειωσε το 1818). Σε αυτό περιλαμβάνονται πολύ ενδιαφέροντα γλυπτά επώνυμων δημιουργών πάνω από τάφους εξέχοντων προσωπικοτήτων της Βαρκελώνης. Το πιο γνωστό γλυπτό είναι το “Beso de la muerte" (Το Φιλί του Θανάτου), στο οποίο ο θάνατος, ως φτερωτός σκελετός δίνει το θανατηφόρο φιλί του σε έναν νεαρό γονατισμένο άντρα που πεθαίνει. Κατασκευάστηκε το 1930 πιθανότερο από τον γλύπτη Joan Fontbernat, αλλά αποδίδεται η πατρότητά του και στον Jaume Barba, του οποίου το όνομα είναι χαραγμένο στη βάση.

Το έργο είναι πολύ επιβλητικό, ρομαντικής αίσθησης και με μεγάλη εκφραστικότητα που προκαλεί ανάμικτα αισθήματα νειάτων και ματαιότητας, ευημερίας και αποσύνθεσης, ερωτισμού και θανάτου. Βρίσκεται στον τάφο του υφαντουργού Josep Llaudet Soler και από κάτω γράφει το επίσης επιβλητικό επίγραμμα:

Así su joven corazón se está apagando
En sus venas su sangre se está enfriando
Y toda fuerza se ha ido. La fé se ha ensalzado
En su caída a los brazos de la muerte. ¡Amén!

«Η νεανική του καρδιά, λοιπόν, έσβησε,
το αιμα στις φλέβες του πάγωσε,
όλη του η δύναμη τον εγκατέλειψε,

Barcelona’s Poblenou Cemetery is an open-air sculpture museum packed with little marvels of funerary art. One of the most outstanding is The Kiss of Death, an arresting and original depiction of death in the form of a winged skeleton kissing a handsome young man. As you look at the sculpture you’ll experience conflicting emotions.

Youth and old age. Plenitude and decay. Eros and Thanatos. They come together and intertwine in a gloomy embrace in this sculpture dating from 1930 attributed to Jaume Barba. It is highly likely that the sculpture was actually made by Joan Fontbernat. Whoever he was, the artist eschews the classical iconography that often represents death as a winged angel. Instead, the most photographed sculpture in the monumental Poblenou Cemetery presents the image of death in the form of a winged skeleton bestowing a kiss on the lips of a handsome young man. White marble and the painstakingly crafted beauty of the ensemble make the work stand out over the other statuary in the cemetery.
