Skull anatomy by Leonardo da Vinci

This is one of a series of studies of the human skull by Leonardo. Based on direct observation, the drawings are famous for their anatomical accuracy and the breathtaking virtuosity of the pen and ink technique employed.

In this meticulously observed side view of the sagittal section, Leonardo plots the site of the sensus communis, which he believed was the locus of the human soul, at the intersection of upright and diagonal lines seen within the tilted plane at a point that marks the proportional centre of the skull. Skull anatomy by Leonardo da Vinci. Historical artwork and notes on the anatomy of the human skull and teeth, by the Italian artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). This bisected skull shows the external structure (right), and dissected facial sinuses (left), the air-filled spaces inside the bones of the face. The diagram at lower left shows the teeth present in one half of the mouth: 4 incisors, 2 canines, 4 pre-molars, and 6 molars. Da Vinci was the first anatomist known to have correctly noted the number and root structure of human teeth. The notes are an example of his mirror writing, which was written backwards from right to left, and could be read in a mirror. (sciencephotogallery)

Tatomir Pitariu

TATOMIR PITARIU is a "dark artist" born and raised in Sibiu, a historic city in the south part of Transilvania, Romania. Though he grew up in the midst of it, Tatomir was, and continues to be fascinated by the mythic and mysterious folklore of his homeland. The dark forests, mountain streams, fantastic creatures and hiking through nature along ancient ruins, set the base for most of his artwork. In 1995 Tatomir moved to Los Angeles with his family. Since then, his art has become a combination of childhood memories and the everyday life in the land of "Hollywood Dreams." Tatomir's original style of graphite drawing became, over the years, art embraced by the black, trash and folk metal scene. Many bands commissioned Tatomir’s work for logos and CD art. His artwork has also been integrated into many L.A. art-scene shows and charity events. Visit his sites for more of his work: TRANSILVANICON and www.tatomir.com. Agostino Arrivabene's vanitas

Immutatio

Agostino Arrivabene is a modern Italian surrealist painter who's work deal with mythological themes and many times his works are based on old medieval or classic paintings giving to them a new interpetation through various distortions and changes. His vanitas works are based in the classic motif of still life vanitas I have already presented. But he extended this theme far more as you can see in his SITE

Il sette (notte)

Proserpina nutrice di pulci

Proserpina ornitofoba

Vanitas con Pieris rapae

This last painting has no skull to remind us death, but the bed with the fragile butterflies, the white sheets piled like sroud give us also an impression for the vulnerability of life beside the light of a day when life wakes up from sleep.
